November 30, 2001: A report suggests that the strain of anthrax used in the attacks and likely originating from USAMRIID, was only shared with a small number of other labs. USAMRIID gave it to Battelle Memorial Institute, in Columbus, Ohio, the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the Defense Research Establishment Suffield, in Canada, the U.S. Army Dugway Proving Ground, in Utah, and the Chemical Defense Establishment at Porton Down, Britain. These in turn spread it to 7 more labs, for a total of a dozen. But only 5 labs total received the virulent form, and some of these may have received strains that were too old (it is known the anthrax used was two years old or less [New York Times, 6/23/02]).
